How to Tell a Story with Data
Tell a Meaningful Story with Data

The first short paper describes 5 steps to telling a story with data:

  1. Find compelling narrative
  2. Audience
  3. Objective and Balance
  4. Don't Censor
  5. Edit

Two of these are problematic. The first is that they glide over the fact that the story needs to be analytically present in the data. That's actually a hard part of the process. You don't just get to decide what the data says, you have to work hard to see and hear what it says.

The second is that items 3 and 4 are very much tied up with one another.

The assignment will be to take some provided data and work through and document the steps on the way to a data-based story/presentation. We expect to see documentation of errors, false starts, brainstorming, rejected ideas, iterations, etc.
